The REAL Meaning Behind Virtual Assistant

I get asked quite often, “What is a virtual assistant?” I respond with the same information about what we do. But I was thinking the other night, what does it really mean to be a VA? So I sat down and figured out what being a VA really means.

Being a Virtual Assistant means:

V irtual – You can work for anyone, anywhere.

Integrity –You have high work standards and adhere to a strict ethical code.

Radiant – If you love what you do, it shows .

True – True to yourself and true to your clients. Honesty is key.

Under promise – and over deliver. That makes your clients happy!

Asset – You are an asset to your clients. They need you as much as you need them.

L oyal – Always be loyal to your clients. Treat each one as if they were your most important .

Astute – Don’t just do the work. Be clever, be smart and be the best!

Sincere – Mean what you say. Do what you say.

Stylish – You get to work in your pajamas!

Ingenious – Keep researching for better ways to do things; for you and your clients .

Student – A good VA should always be learning the latest and greatest in technology.

Teacher – A good VA should also be able to teach their clients various things.

Assistants – VA’s are an assistant. We are here to assist!

Necessary – VA’s can be vital to the growth of a small business.

Trained – VA’s should have some level of experience being an administrative assistant.

To be a VA is more than doing the work. It’s about the precious gift you give back to your clients, TIME.

What it means to be a VA:

A virtual assistant does more than push papers, we create efficient and effective systems. We may be considered “virtual assistants” but that phrase is totally underrated. Many of us have years of executive administrative experience and a lengthy educational history unlike the typical “assistant”.

Being a virtual assistant gives me the opportunity not to have the typical 9-5 job. I am presented with different arenas daily. For instance one day I am an internet researcher, the next day I am a content editor, and the list goes on. This career is fun, exciting, and rewarding. However, it also possesses lots of responsibility, initiative, and dedication which every business owner should strive to exceed.

I love being able to help different people with various backgrounds. I learn something new each and every day. I love eliminating that thin line between love and hate when it comes to my clients professions. I love what I do, no matter what tasks may lay ahead.

Being a virtual assistant means more to be than working at home- I am the right-hand superwoman to busy professionals who need the extra time to enjoy what we call life.

Tracey, that is the most amazing article! It absolutely hits every point that I feel is part of my Virtual Assistant Business and I could not have said it better myself.

Here is my comment for the contest:

1.To me, being a VA means throwing off the shackles of Corporate America, re-connecting with who I really am, finding others who share my passions, values and goals, and serving them to the best of my abilities by using my skills, backed by my passion for our mutual goals.

I have just recently learned the term “Virtual Assistant” and it appears to be the same work that I do now as an Administrative Assistant for one company, but done for many smaller companies and providing more time and self-scheduling freedom for the V.A. as well as providing the first-class service of a professional assistant at a more affordable price to the smaller business.

Sounds like my Dream Job! :-)

I think being a VA means being able to do work you already love to do but having flexibility as well since you work virtually. It really seems to be an ideal situation and I wish larger companies saw the benefit of it more.

Beaing a VA would mean freedom. Freedom from having to rely on anyone else to bring home the bacon, freedom to work when and where I want. Freedom to get out from under the pile of bills. Freedom is a beautiful thing.

I have been interested in finding out about this kind of profession. I have far more education and experience than the typical administrative assistant, and know I would be amazingly more productive if I had the freedom and flexibility to control my time. I bring far more to jobs than is required, go above and beyond, and have an ‘old school’ work ethic that doesn’t seem to be out there anymore. Kudos to all who give their professional best. Nice work, Tracy! I’ll be tweeting you!

My idea for wanting to offer Virtual Assistance is to free up my clients’ time for them to do the things they are the best at while I do what I love doing yet have the fun of doing for others what might be boring if I did all day for just myself.

I was a Kelly Girl for years, going from office to office to help out and loved making new friends and seeing new places and ways of doing things and to me this is the same thing only I never have to leave my office.

If I ever get the point in my business where I can hire my OWN VA, she or he will be doing the time wasters/sappers that will enable me to do more of the things I love to do. And no matter how busy or UNbusy we are, help is always, or at least usually, welcome.

To me being a virtual assistant means that I’m helping a small business owner run a successful business. While I’m doing the tasks that the entrepreneur is weak at, the small business owner can focus on what they are strong at. That’s why I love what I do and will probably never quit!
